Introduction

Steve Crew, one of the founders of the Wise Old Owls, sadly died on July 18th 1999, aged just 50.  He will be sorely missed by many people; needless to say not least of all by his family and especially his widow Joan.

Following Steve's death numerous people expressed their desire to see something done to commemorate his long-time contribution to quiz leagues, and to mark the genuine affection & high regard in which he was held.

After talking to people it soon became apparent that a run of the mill competition or trophy named in his honour was not enough.  To do him justice would require some meaningful rationale be behind was whatever was done.

Steve had firm ideas about the spirit in which quiz matches ought to be played.  He took a dim view of the gamesmanship and "win at all costs" mentality that some teams display on occasion.  That being the case it was resolved to institute an annual competition - as part of the Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League - to reward and, just as importantly, engender fair play.

All teams participating in the Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League were balloted in December 1999 & a team from each conference was chosen to contest  the Steve Crew Memorial Fair Play Trophy.   The first annual event was held on 5 January 2000 and was won by the Cellar Bar from Batley.  They get to keep the trophy for 12 months after which, early in 2001, they will be invited to defend it against whichever six teams the league then chooses to honour fot their "fair play".

Nominees who contested the 1st Annual competition

Cellar Bar, Batley                                 Scored 141/200

Cliffe Tree, Wakefield                         Scored 130/140

Old Halfway House, Horbury           Scored 119/140

Although only those teams nominated were able to contest the trophy, all teams participating in the Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League were invited to attend and take part in the quiz.  Indeed, in addition the the six named above, plus a representative side from the 5 Towns Quiz League, ten other Wise Old Owls teams took part in the evening.

The event was a "table quiz" rather than thus usual team v. team contest.  All participants were faced with the same questions and teams were allowed to field their entire playing squad (i.e. not limited to four players as in matches).

I am peased to announce that the evening apears to have been an unqualified success.  More than 100 people attended and all those reporting advised that they had enjoyed both the evening and the opportunity to remember Steve.
