The year 2001 Champion of Champions match was staged on 25th
April at the Lee Brig Working Men's Club, St Mary's Road, Altofts
(Normanton). The event, staged along with the final of
our Plate competition (for teams eliminated early on in the search
for the Champion of Champions) drew 100 or so spectators.
The night also saw the presentation of League trophies.
The main event, the Champion of Champions match, was won by
the White Lion of Armley, Leeds who defeated the Washington
Hotel of Sheffield.
The match was very even up to half time, with only four points
separating the teams as they went into the break.
However, early in the second half the White Lion stormed into a
ten point lead, extending this to 13 points at the end of round 7.
The Washington then came right back at them, slashing their lead
to 8 points by the close of the penultimate round, reducing the margin
further to just six points as the match drew to its conclusion.
The aggregate score in the match was 128. This, coming from a
possible maximum of 164, represents a strike rate of just over 78%; a very
impressive proportion indeed - if just slightly lower than the
aggregates of 80% (131 points) and 79% (129) in the 2000 and 1999 finals,
respectively.
