The year 2000 Champion of Champions match was staged on 26th April
at the Lee Brig Working Men's Club, St Mary's Road,
Altofts (Normanton). The event, staged along with the inaugural final of our Plate contest
(for teams eliminated early on in the search for the Champion of Champions)
drew 100 or so spectators. The night also saw the presentation of League
trophies.
The main event, the Champion of Champions match, was won
by the Branch Road Inn of Greetland (Halifax) who defeated the New Inn of
Walton, Wakefield. The same
team won the competition in 1999, playing as the Travelers' Inn
from Elland.
The match was fairly even up to half time, with only five points
separating the two teams as they went into the break (exactly the
margin by which the holders had trailed at half-time the year before).
However, in the second half the Branch stormed to victory, only
missing two of their questions in the final four rounds, while stealing
no fewer than six of their opponents'!
The aggregate score in the match was 131. This, coming from a
possible maximum of 164, represents a strike rate of 79.9%; a very
impressive proportion indeed & a slight improvement on the aggregate
of 79% reached in the 1999 final.
