In December 2000, thanks to the prompting of Pete Greenwood of the Bolton Premier Quiz League, the Wise Old Owls hosted the first ever (to our knowledge) Roses Quiz Challenge. The event saw teams from Lancashire & Yorkshire go head to head in a match-play event. In the first match a team made up of members of the Cellar Bar, Batley (Ian Sutton & Eb Saxton), plus Tim Johnson of the Horse & Jockey, Altofts and John Bray of the Railway, Mirfield saw off the Astley Bridge Conservative Club from the Bolton Premier Quiz League. The score being 65:45. In the second match Lee Brigands (Mel Brooks, Walt Massey, Steve Stenson & yours' truly) beat the Royal Exchange of Littleborough 62:45. Their establishing a 2:0 lead in a three match event thus guaranteeing Yorkshire's success. In the final match, a team composed of members of the Astley Bridge Conservative Club and Royal Exchange defeated the Branch Road Inn (Wise Old Owls KO champions 1999 & 2000) to salve the honour of Lancashire. The event was a great success and all who attended enjoyed themselves immensely. Our kind hosts were Graham & Pat of the Horse & Jockey, Altofts. The event will be repeated! |
