Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League
have since 1997 continued the tradition begun by the former Tetley's
League of staging an annual Champion
of Champions knock-out contest[1].
The competition was first run in 1969, when entry was restricted to pub
teams (of 4 players) who had won their local league, hence the name Champion
of Champions. It was then held
every year afterwards (excepting 1976) until Tetley’s sadly withdrew from the
quiz scene in 1996. The same year
the Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League was
formed to take its place. Since
1997 they have continued the tradition of staging an annual Champion of Champions knock-out tournament[2].
This
year’s competition enters its closing phase tomorrow night, with the staging
of four quarter final matches around the region.
In Halifax the Branch Road Inn
(Greetland) are set to play the Red Deer
(city centre, Sheffield); in Sheffield the Washington
are to play the Horse & Jockey
(Ossett) & in Wakefield the Masons
Arms (Ossett) play the New Inn
(Walton) and the Horse & Jockey
(Altofts) play the Cellar Bar (Batley). The
final of this year’s competition will be staged at the Lee Brigg W.M.C., St.
Mary’s Rd, Altofts on April 26th. As
well as hosting the Champion of Champions match the club will also play host that night
to the inaugural Wise Old Owls Yorkshire
Plate final. This competition,
also a knock-out, is being contested by those teams who lost-out in the early
stages of the Champion of Champions tournament. The
format for the finals evening on 26th April is as follows ... 19.30 Guests
arrive (table quizzes &tc. prizes for winners) 20.00 Plate competition final commences 21.15 Champion of Champions Match 22.45 Presentation of trophies (League &

[1] Past winners have come from as far afield as Sheffield (where the Beeley Wood were the first winners in 1967), Hull (The Station were winners in 1992) and Elland (the Travellers Rest were winners in 1999).
