FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League

Final of the 31st Annual Champion of Champions Contest

11 April 2000

The Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League have since 1997 continued the tradition begun by the former Tetley's League of staging an annual Champion of Champions knock-out contest[1].  The competition was first run in 1969, when entry was restricted to pub teams (of 4 players) who had won their local league, hence the name Champion of Champions.  It was then held every year afterwards (excepting 1976) until Tetley’s sadly withdrew from the quiz scene in 1996.  The same year the Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League was formed to take its place.  Since 1997 they have continued the tradition of staging an annual Champion of Champions knock-out tournament[2].

This year’s competition enters its closing phase tomorrow night, with the staging of four quarter final matches around the region.  In Halifax the Branch Road Inn (Greetland) are set to play the Red Deer (city centre, Sheffield); in Sheffield the Washington are to play the Horse & Jockey (Ossett) & in Wakefield the Masons Arms (Ossett) play the New Inn (Walton) and the Horse & Jockey (Altofts) play the Cellar Bar (Batley).

The final of this year’s competition will be staged at the Lee Brigg W.M.C., St. Mary’s Rd, Altofts on April 26th.  As well as hosting the Champion of Champions match the club will also play host that night to the inaugural Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Plate final.  This competition, also a knock-out, is being contested by those teams who lost-out in the early stages of the Champion of Champions tournament.

The format for the finals evening on 26th April is as follows ...

19.30   Guests arrive (table quizzes &tc. prizes for winners)

20.00   Plate competition final commences
